Martinez, Red Sox shutout Bluejays

May 18, 2000 -- Pedro Martinez called it a bad day.

"I wasn't consistent at all," he said after allowing three hits in seven innings Wednesday night as the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-0. Martinez, who pitched a two-hitter against Baltimore last week, improved to 7-1 with a major-leading 0.90 ERA. He struck out six, walked two and hit two batters.

"I was a little bit erratic," he said. "I couldn't spot my fastball, and it would take off on me. I would throw a couple of good ones, but then I would struggle with it."

Martinez has given up one earned run in his last 32 innings. Helped by three double plays, he combined with relievers Brian Rose and Tim Young on a four-hitter.

"It didn't look like he had a bad day to me," Toronto's Alex Gonzalez said. "He kept us off balance all night. He did a really good job."

"Even though the results were real good today, all the credit should be given to my teammates. They gave me all the lead I needed," Martinez said. "I would have been in a lot of trouble if it was 0-0."

Martinez has won 14 of his last 17 starts and  has pitched 17 straight scoreless innings. He has gone at least seven innings in each of his starts this season.
