Pedro
Martinez dominates Mariners in Bosox's season opener.
April 4, 2000 -- Pedro Martinez, by far the most dominant pitcher in baseball last year,
picked up right where he left off in Boston's season opener on Tuesday.
The
Dominican-born, Martinez struck out 11 over seven overpowering innings and allowed only a bloop single to
Carlos Guillen in the third and another single to John Olerud in the fourth to carry the Red Sox to
a 2-0 blanking of the Griffey-less Seattle Mariners.
"I felt pretty good," Martinez said. "I don't go for strikeouts or personal statistics. I just want to
help the team win. I felt pretty confident but I didn't know I would have such a good
game."
Nobody else was surprised with Martinez coming off a season in which he led the American
League with 23 wins, 313 strikeouts and a 2.07 ERA to run away with the Cy Young Award.
"Pedro pitched outstanding for us," said Boston manager Jimy Williams, who expected nothing less.
